One of us is next

The 18th book I read this year was One of Us is Next by Karen M McManus, the second book in the One of Us Lying series.

You can see my thoughts on book one here.

A summary attempt

This book follows Bronwyn’s younger sister, Maeve and her friends in the aftermath of Simon’s legacy. Plenty of copy cat gossip websites have popped up since the dramatic end of book 1 but none were all that serious until the truth or dare game began. Everyone in the school receives a text declaring a new game, someone in the school will be contacted with the offer of a truth or dare and they have 24 hours to reply or the sender will automatically assume the answer is truth. Since most of the copycats have crashed and burned, the first recipient doesn’t take it very seriously and the resulting fall out of the truth that is revealed is awful. Everyone quickly learns that you ‘always take the dare’ but the dares get gradually more excessive until one has tragic consequences. The story follows Maeve and her friends in the centre of the storm, trying to figure out who is behind the game.

My thoughts

I enjoyed this book just as much as the first! I did figure out who was behind the game before the big reveal but I don’t think that’s a bad thing because it wasn’t a pot twist pulled out of thin air for dramatic effect, it still took me by surprise when I figured it out regardless. I really liked the glimpses we got of the characters from book 1, especially more Bronwyn and Nate time! I like the journey all the characters go on and just generally these are enjoyable books.
