Black Sunshine

The 24th book I consumed this year was Black Sunshine by Karina Halle. The book was an audio listen from the Audible included library and was my work entertainment for a couple days.

Summary attempt

The story begins with Lenore nearing her 21st birthday and the end of her exam period for her second year of University. A strange figure has been stalking her through the streets of San Francisco, there’s a hot guy she keeps seeing out in clubs and a strange man who came to her door asking questions about her parents. One week before her birthday she is kidnapped by a cold, unforgiving stranger, just as a strange transformation start to happen to her. Lenore not only finds herself surrounded by vampires but she is astonished to discover that she is in the process of becoming one too. Slowly it is revealed that Lenore has been lied to all her life, her parents are not what they seem, her history is a lie and now these lies are catching up to them.

What did I think?

Okay, so this book was a little cheesy, falling on back on classic vampire fiction tropes. The word building of the magic was kind of interesting. I didn’t enjoy how much it relied on the miscommunication trope, where she’s kidnapped by these vampires and locked up and not told anything, then the story is moved along by something occurring and someone going ‘has he not told you…?’ and then facts about the world being doled out in a series of little expositional monologues. This story is slow going but a fun listen if you’re not out to take it too seriously. The spicy scenes are good but the romance isn’t all that convincing because mostly the dark and broody male mc acts like he hates her until suddenly he’s head over heels in love. Conveniently, at one point during the transformation process, she hits the ‘lust’ phase, where the male mc brings in some random dude to fuck Lenore for a couple days… again, this is what I mean by, it’s alright, as long as you are not out for high quality literature.
