Bone Witch trilogy

The 27th, 28th and 35th book I consumed this year was the Bone Witch Trilogy by Rin Chupeco. This was an audible included library listen to keep me entertained whilst working.

An attempt at summarising

The story flashes between Tea’s POV in the past and the Bard, who present day Tea has recruited to tell her story.

The past narrative begins when Tea discovers she’s a Bone Witch, after she accidentally raises her big brother from the dead and she is taken away to learn how to be an Asha. Becoming an Asha involves lots of rigid rules, training and strict traditions, which Tea constantly rubs up against and as an apprentice, she’s always in trouble. Dark Asha are responsible for putting down the giant monsters, called Dava, which plague the land and there only two other Dark Asha left. Tea’s training is accelerated, despite her many transgressions, out of desperation. Dark Asha’s lives are typically short and brutal and Tea gradually discovers how the Asha Elders’ corruption contributes to the destruction of Dark Asha.

Present day Tea is on a deserted beach surrounded by the bones of Dava, the Bard follows her as she raises seven Dava, for the purpose of a mission as yet un-disclosed. As she takes those Dava to invade cities in attempt to purge the corruption she observed as an Asha in training.

It takes all three books for the two timelines to meet back up and for us to discover the reason for Tea’s action in the present.

My thoughts

These books are great for fantasy lovers, the magic system and world building is really interesting. I don’t usually like stories that are told through flashbacks but it is really well done in these books. Plus, the fact that we don’t find out the motivations behind Tea’s action until the end of third book doesn’t feel drawn out, or badly written, it’s actually really well done and I genuinely gasped.

They are quite nice audio books, although I’m not a huge fan of the female narration’s attempts at deep male voices but otherwise they are quite enjoyable as audio.
