My 60th read of the year was Ledge by Stacey McEwan, an author I found through her hilarious ‘book husband’ skits on Tiktok.
A rough summary
The Ledge is an civilisation trapped between a vast mountain and a chasm, where once a year their captors descend and steal away some of their people. Dawsyn is the last member of her family still alive, the rest lost to the Glacians (their captors), illness or the chasm. So far she has avoided the annual cull but this is the year her luck runs out. When faced with a challenge from the Glacians of surrendering her soul, or trying her luck being hunted through the wilderness, she chooses to run. Dawsyn finds herself aided by a half-glacian, whose motivations she can’t figure out and despite her reservations she finds herself drawn to him. In her journey she discovers the betrayal that led to her people being trapped on the ledge, the history of her family and the plight of other half-glacians.
My thoughts
I enjoyed this book, it had a really nice fast pace and nothing is drawn out too long, such as her developing feelings for the love interest, her acceptance of the things she learns about her people and the rebellion she becomes involved in. It’s got loads of great tropes in it, including a main character who is not necessarily likeable but you understand why she is the way she is.
In conclusion, I plan to order the next book on payday!
