So my ex-boyfriend is a serial killer by Kylie Scott was the 48th book I read this, I wanted a short listen that was in the Audible included library but this book exceeded my expectations.
A plot summary
This book is set ten years after our main character’s boyfriend was arrested for murder, following a series of disappearances in their town, all of women that looked suspiciously like her. During the trial the media and his prosecution team went on a witch hunt after Sidney, saying that she manipulated him into doing the killings. The night he was arrested he was found with a kill kit on him and the cops interrupted him mid- murder attempt of Sidney but despite this, the cops still blamed her and started this narrative that she was somehow an accomplice.
As a result of all this, Sidney is a shut-in, she does a remote data entry job, takes self-defence classes in her own converted garage. The only reason she hasn’t left town is that she feels a certain amount of survivors guilt, as the places he took her hiking seem to be the places he buried his victims. She believes this is because the only victim that was found, was discovered in a spot he took her too, which made her suspicious of all the other places he took her. Sidney made some true crime friends who have become the only friends she has, who have been helping her search these areas and piece together all the places he took her too that could be burial sites.
Sidney is still regularly harassed by people in her town and the cops from the original case, but as it reaches the ten year mark, her friends gently suggest maybe it’s time to ‘get a life’. What luck that a very hot new neighbour moved in next door! However, just a she starts to re-build her confidence, a true crime podcast starts a series specifically focused on her ex’s murder and the disappearances, with the angle of arguing the prosecution’s point. This has very real-life consequences for Sidney and also causes her ex’s case to go to re-trial thanks to overwhelming public support.
Can her new romance survive this public scrutiny? Is Sidney even safe?
My review
This genuinely such a good read. My expectations were low because the cover and the title make it seem like it’s just going to be a silly goofy time, plus it was only six hours as an audio. It honestly has so much more depth to it than I was expecting, the true crime elements were genuinely interesting, especially how it explores the ethics of certain aspects of true crime. I really loved the subplot of the romance but I also loved how the new guy is not her saviour in the end, she saves herself in frankly awesome ending.
I will definitely be exploring more reads by this author, I was just looking for something to entertain me during my commute and I was so pleasantly surprised by this book!
