I’ve been listening to this five book series across a few months because some required a credit to listen to, so the Waldo Rabbit series by Nelson Chereta were books’ number 16, 22, 30, 45 and 48 that I consumed this year. The titles in this series are comprised of ‘The (sort of) Dark Mage’, ‘After the Rabbit’, ‘The Rabbit Great and Terrible’, ‘The Rabbit Who Lived’ and ‘The Rabbit Barbarian’.
A terrible attempt at summarising
Waldo comes from a country of Dark Mages, ruled by seven great families, one of which he is the heir too. Because of his half white mage heritage, the other families don’t believe he’s up to the task of ruling after his mother, so for his first quest they set impossible conditions, destined to hopefully kill him. He sets off on his quest and completes the first task with relative ease, taking a great monster as a familiar (the first of three he must acquire). Unfortunately, he also ends up accidentally marrying the succubus he binds to himself and to make matters worse, he botches the binding ritual which leaves Alice about to disobey and even harm him. She doesn’t want to, however, she’s determined to be a good wife to her husband, even with his strange ways and customs. The rest of the books follow as Waldo endeavours to fulfil the terms of his quest, acquiring more monsters and a lot more trouble along the way.
My thoughts
These books are so much fun! They are silly and funny, full of Pratchett-esq humour. There’s lots of hilarious bits where Waldo’s unconventional upbringing gets him into trouble with Alice, such as not really caring about nudity, or proprietary, or why Alice shouldn’t take multiple lovers to satisfy her succubus needs. He binds an Ogre who likes to be whipped, invents a religion just to practice lying that starts a full scale rebellion in his wake and lots of other laugh out loud moments. It’s proper high fantasy made funny and I have really enjoyed listening to what’s available of the series so far (from a quick snoop on the author’s Facebook page, it does look like there will be more!). These books have got me through some really rough or boring days at work, I definitely recommend them.
