The 53rd book I read this year was Bitten by Surprise by Lizzy Gayle. This was an indie book series I found through my podcast: Lazy Book Lovers Podcast and I thought I’d give it a go.
A brief summary
In this world supernatural creatures live secretly side by side with humans, but have their own governing body and police. Our main character Char is a scientist who blends magic with science, whose goal for many years now has been to develop a cure for vampirism, continuing the work of her father, who was turned into a vampire when she was a child. Just as she’s about to have a breakthrough, her lab is ambushed by vampires, who take her vaccine and her assistant. In the attack, she uses her psychic powers to inject one of her prototype vaccines into one of them and, to her surprise, it works… except it reverses him back into a 300 hundred year old human, which it kills him. Soon after a drug called ‘God Killer’ starts killing vampires in a gang war.
Several weeks later she is rescued from a kidnap attempt by vampires in the rival gang, by a very handsome detective from the supernatural police force. Not knowing she is the one who made the original, he offers her a deal: protection for Char and her family, in exchange for doing research on the drug killing people and helping his investigation. She thought she was being hunted for her vaccine but actually, she’s being pursued for her psychic abilities. The book follows as they investigate and slowly grow… closer.
My thoughts
You know? For a short and sweet fantasy book on KU, I wasn’t expecting anything too fancy, but I found this book to be really enjoyable and cheesy in all the right places! The world is quite rich and the characters are fun. I’ll definitely continue the series because it was the right mix of easy reading but actually had plot.
