Permission to read whatever you like

So, since I rediscovered my passion for reading, my read count has progressively gotten higher. I started out by chasing 50 books in a year. This goal has since shifted to kind of a two part goal of 50 book-books, digital or physical, excluding audio, and then an overall total goal of 100 that includes audio.

2020 I just about hit 50

2021 I made it 57

2022 I got to 77 overall

2023 I made it to 98 overall

so far in 2024, I’m up to 53 books overall!

Do you know what the secret is to reading more? Besides habit and naturally speeding up with practice? Reading whatever I fucking feel like.

Not what is trending.

Not things people think I ‘should’ read (i.e. classics).

Also, I am unapologetically putting down books I’m not enjoying. No slogging through books that just aren’t for me, there’s not enough time in the day.

So, in case you were looking for permission here it is:
read your trash

read your romance

read your manga

read your epic fantasies

read your romantasy

read your smut

read classics if that’s what you enjoy

read thrillers

read shifter trash

read your horror

No genre is superior. No book length is superior.

It is not a competition. All reading is good reading. Whether it’s 1 book or a hundred.

You are supposed to enjoy reading.

So yeah, in contradiction to a lot of the crap that gets spewed on booktok or booktube, read whatever the fuck you like.

Here is your permission to just have fun with it.
