My Boss is the Devil

The 57th book I read this year was My Boss is the Devil by Ben Schenkman, this was the July-August buddy read on my podcast, The Lazy Book Lovers podcast.

An attempt at summarising

Nick is in a dead end job as a barista, coasting through life as a college drop-out with aspirations but no real career plans. When his friends perform a ‘ritual’ in a graveyard to summon the devil and he goes along to watch, he never expected the actual devil to appear to him and offer to take him out for a nice meal and make a deal. The deal is that Nick gets a chance to do what he really desires, making the world a better place, by working for the devil and helping to make deals on his behalf. Since it sounds too good to be true, the devil gives Nick six months doing the job as a freebie with no strings attached. Working for the devil is surprisingly, nice? But in order to make a difference the world, Nick has to compromise his morals and potentially even his soul.

My thoughts

I enjoyed this book, the beginning is a bit slow to build because of setting up the premise but I thought the theological discussions were surprisingly deep for a short book that’s a little but comical about working for the devil. I liked the main character, I liked how we slowly see his world view on what is reasonable adjust. I think I will pick up the next book in the series because I want to see where this goes.
