The Baby Dragon Bakery – A.T. Qureshi

The Baby Dragon Bakery by A.T. Qureshi, the second book in the Baby Dragon series, was my 18th read for this year. I enjoyed book 1 and went straight on to book 2 because light and fluffy was definitely what my brain needed last month.

A summary attempt

This book follows Lavinia, who met in book 1 and works at the cafe and Theo, the baker who provides the fusion concoctions for the cafe. They’ve been best friends since childhood but lately something has shifted between them, when Lavinia gets swept up in the romance at an engagement party and goes for a kiss, which is swiftly rejected by a panicked Theo, she assumes this shift is all one sided. She decides to help the move on from the incident as friends by directing her romantic energy to her ‘perfect’ match, the part time professor who works at the cafe. Except her and Theo’s rhythm is still… off? But Lavinia only has a few months until the ‘deadline’ for the life she wants is up, her parents met in winter when her mum was 25 and she’s decided that her life must follow the same path. So Mr.Perfect match is the logical choice, not messy best friend crush where she could ruin everything with her stupid crush.

My thoughts

I liked this book but not as much as book 1, I felt it relied too much on the miscommunication trope, which I don’t really enjoy in a book. As 90% of the plot would have been redundant if they’d just had a honest fucking conversation. Then again, some people love the tension of that so I’m not saying this would be a turn off for everyone. Also, I could have done with a bit more baby dragon time! The story in book 1 definitely felt a bit richer but I didn’t not enjoy this book, and it hasn’t put me off the world and reading the next one.
