The 31st book I read this year was Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree. This came from a Cozy Fantasy rec list I put together and is one of the books that was at the forefront of this new genre when it came about.
It’s basically high fantasy, without the high stakes.
A brief plot summary
Vivian is an Orc barbarian who is ready to hang up her sword and trade in the short, tumultuous life of a mercenary for a cozy little cafe of her own. She chooses a city to settle in and begins making strides towards fulfilling her dream, with the help of a taciturn (but soft at heart) woodworker, a succubus and a pint sized baker, it seems like she just might make it. But there are two problems, no one here as ever heard of coffee and the ghosts of her past have come to haunt, or possibly destroy, her new life.
My thoughts
This lives up to the term cozy, there’s literally no other way to put it. It’s cute, the Sapphic romance is so sweet, the characters are great and you get a happily ever after. There’s loads of little cute moments that fantasy nerds will love, like them inventing iced coffee and cinnamon buns, plus other coffee shop staples. There’s plenty of found family cuteness on top of the love story, but really the central part of the story is this cozy feeling of community, over a warm cup of coffee.
Only downside, this book made me consume a lot more coffee while I was reading it.
