To Kill a Mockingbird

Continuing on my quest to read #100booksin2019, I read to ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’ by Harper Lee; a classic that I’m ashamed to say I’ve never read before! This is book number 3 in my mission, I’m trying to alternate between classics and newer/ more modern books in effort to make more progress through my book shelves.

I loved this book, it’s a little slow in the beggining and I couldn’t quite see what all the fuss was about. How could this be a ground breaking book when the entire story was just about some kids teasing Boo Radley? Then it becomes so much more than that, it delves into race, religion, sexism and class issues, all of which is cleverly told through the completely blind childish eyes of the speaker. She is just telling us what she sees in her day to day life, which just so happens to be set in the deep south, during a trial where her father is representing an innocent black man in an alleged rape case. The fact that a kid is telling it, with the bald faced honesty and ignorance of a child, is a very smart way to hold a mirror up to society at that time.

The book featured in the banner image is my copy, puchased second hand from Amazon (since there are no books stores in my town, most of my books are from Amazon. I try to buy second hand ones that come from book stores where possible but I shamelessly love Amazon for books!)

    1. It’s definitely worth reading, sometimes you find that classics aren’t worth their reputation but this one is!
